Minutes for the Miami meeting of the Committee on International Education

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27, 2004.

Members and friends present introduced themselves. It was noted that there were many international visitors present. The minutes of the summer meeting at Madison were unanimously approved. (Moved: Drenchko, second: Fitzgibbons).

Since 2005 is the World Physics Year, suggestions for meeting topics include: (a) metric system standard in the USA (b) environmental issues (c) contributions of immigrants to (US) physics [cosponsor with History committee]
5. Summer - 2006, Syracuse, NY (Tentative)
6. Winter - January 2007, University of North Carolina, Greensboro, NC
7. Summer - 2007, Seattle, WA (with AAS)
8. Winter - January 2008, Baltimore, MD (probable)

B. Nominations for new members of the committee:The following names were submitted to the AAPT Nominating Committee: Tom Haff, D. Gewanter and Peter Hopkinson for committee membership. J. Fitzgibbons mentioned that we should seek future nominees from younger AAPT members who are involved with international activities.

C. Increased international members of AAPT - what can committee do to keep better contact with international members - J Mallow & Helge Kastrup will investigate this

D. Check if articles in AJP could be translated into different languages. Contact C. Mamola of TPT on the exchange of articles from different journals.

E. We should have greater contact with other physics teachers organizations in other countries - e.g. Great Britain (IOP), China and Denmark (DAPT).

F. Nominations for the Fuller Fund:
The following people have been nominated for Fuller Fund awards: Daniel Lottes (Brazil) was mentioned as an earlier nomination. J. Fitzgibbons will request to C. Robertson that we be notified as to the awardees.

G. LISTSERVE - file of addresses for notifying the committee on topics - J. Fitzgibbons will check if subsets of the committee can be notified; members and friends expressed an interest in using this feature. The Chair will check into this.

H. D. Franklin - briefed the committee on the HS International Olympiad (17 question packet of open ended experiments) [in English] Oral presentations of group work will be mandatory. Schedule: Brisbane, Australia June 24-July 1, 2004; Switzerland 2005; Brataslava, Slovakia 2006; s. Korea 2007.

I. F. Stein APS - The Spanish translation of String and Sticky Tape demonstrations is available and free - compiled by Ron Edge and translated by Teddy Halpern.

J. D. Zollman is maintaining the ICPE website - http://web.phys.ksu.edu/icpe - International Commission on Physics Education. He will cross link to the committee website and we will reciprocate (G. Ramsey).
