The following continuing education non-credit workshops will be offered during the 2012-2013 academic year. Experienced faculty members as well as practicing members of the legal community will conduct the workshops at Loyola's Water Tower campus. The workshop topics have been chosen based on responses to our annual graduate survey. If you have a suggestion for a workshop topic, feel free to email paralegal@luc.edu and we would be happy to consider it. Prices for the non-credit workshops vary, so please check each item accordingly. Space is often limited, so do not delay your registration!


TrialDirector Workshops

Dates:   Introduction to TrialDirector, Saturday, September 15, 2012
                   Advanced TrialDirector, Saturday, September 22, 2012

Time: 10 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. (with 1/2 hour lunch break)

Location: Room 710 of the Corboy Law Center (25 E. Pearson St.), located on our Water Tower campus.

Cost: $60 per workshop

The Institute for Paralegal Studies is offering two four-hour workshops covering TrialDirector.  TrialDirector is a trial presentation software used to organize exhibits and depositions, prepare cases for trial, and enhance courtroom case presentations.

The September 15 workshop will introduce participants to TrialDirector and will cover the use of pdfs, demonstrative exhibits and deposition synchronization.

The September 22 workshop with review more advanced features including use of the trial board and graphics during trial. Special permission is required to take the advanced features workshop without having taken the September 15 introductory workshop. Please contact paralegal@luc.edu to request special permission.

These workshops are open only to alumni or current students of the Institute for Paralegal Studies at Loyola Chicago. Students are expected to have a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office products prior to taking these short courses.

BASICS OF PROJECT MANAGEMENT

This 4 hour workshop will introduce you to project management, and the skills required to successfully manage projects. It begins with an introduction explaining why project management is being increasingly used by organizations. Then, participants will break up into teams, and complete a project that illustrates the hands-on issues pertaining to all projects.

The remainder of the workshop will provide students with an overview of the tools and techniques that project managers use in project planning, monitoring, scheduling and control. The workshop will conclude with a discussion about how project management principles and techniques can be applied to the legal environment.

By the end of the workshop:

The instructor, Tim Mojonnier, is President of Mojonnier & Associates, a management education and consulting company based in the Chicagoland area. Mr. Mojonnier’s first experience in project management was at FMC Corp., a $3 billion global corporation. There he managed a 5-person project team, developed a project plan, created a project schedule, monitored and controlled performance, and successfully implemented a turnkey business system at the Beverage Equipment Division. 

Mr. Mojonnier has subsequently consulted with a variety of businesses on a diverse set of projects, from mergers and acquisitions to business systems implementations such as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP). For one $12 billion global healthcare company based in Chicago, Mr. Mojonnier traveled between Cartago, Costa Rica and San Juan, Puerto Rico to resolve complex cultural and systems issues. 

In addition to his consulting practice, Mr. Mojonnier has conducted project management workshops for professional organizations such as the Rochester Chapter of APICS, the Association for Operations Management. He has also taught project management courses at Loyola University Chicago for more than 16 years.

Mr. Mojonnier holds a Masters of Business Administration in finance and accounting from the University of Chicago. He holds a B.A. in philosophy from Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania and did a year of degree work at the University of Manchester in Manchester, England.

eDiscovery Current Topics

Date:  Saturday, November 17, 2012

Time:  10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. (with 15 minute break)

Location: Corboy Law Center, Water Tower Campus, CLC Room 202

Panel Members: Eamonn Coyle, Jenna Rooney, and Jennifer Polzer

This workshop will be a panel presentation with a period of audience discussion regarding current topics in eDiscovery. The panel will consist of paralegals working on eDiscovery at law firms, third party vendors, and corporations.

Some of the topics to be covered are:

Negotiating Electronically Stored Information (ESI) Agreements
Managing an ESI project
ESI Productions to Government Entities
Search Term Creation and the Importance of Search Variations
Using Review Tools to Assist with Privilege Withholding and Privilege Redaction Logs

Prior to joining Inventus, Jennifer held senior, client-solution positions with Winston & Strawn, Huron Consulting, Encore Discovery Solutions and Applied Discovery. Jennifer is an expert on electronic discovery management with a focus on assisting case teams and clients in developing optimal document review strategies.

Concordance

Date:  January 12, 2012

Application Fundamentals from 10:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Concordance is the litigation software of choice for many of Chicago’s finest law firms. This half of the course will show you the best practices for using Concordance to search and organize your litigation documents. Learn how to view, search, global search & replace, tag, sort, enter and edit information, and change the layout in Concordance. This course will be only open to Loyola paralegal graduates and current Loyola paralegal students. Students are expected to have a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office products prior to taking this short course.

Administrative Fundamentals from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

This half of the course will show you the best practices for creating a new database, modifying fields, database concatenation and importing/exporting records & images. You will also be introduced to CPLs, tag management and document production sets. This course will be only open to Loyola paralegal graduates and current Loyola paralegal students. Students are expected to have a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office products prior to taking this short course.

Contract Administration

Date: February 16, 2013

Time:  10am - 1pm with a 15 minute break

Location:  Loyola University Chicago, Water Tower Campus
                 Maguire Hall Room 324

                 Maguire Hall is located at 1 E. Pearson                 

Instructor:  Lisa Tamburini

Cost:  $45

Contract administration concentrates on the relationship between the client and the supplier from contract award to contract closeout ensuring the supplier delivers the product and/or service in conformance with the purchase document requirements. The contract administrator must completely understand all aspects of the purchase document. This workshop will concentrate on Contract Administration Principles, the Do's and Don'ts of Contract Administration, Ethical Decision Making and Contract Administration, as well as Records Retention with regards to Contract Administration. Students are expected to have a good working knowledge of contract law and the basic requirements of an enforceable contract.

Ms. Tamburini is a Compliance Officer & Legal Counsel for RMB Capital Management in Chicago. Her legal practice has been concentrated in the corporate and securities areas. She also worked as a corporate paralegal at Winston & Strawn in Chicago and ServiceMaster Company in Downers Grove, Illinois.

Computer Forensics

Date:  March 16, 2013

Time:  10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Instructor:  Eric Miller from Forensicon, Inc.

Cost:  $45

Computer forensics pertainins to legal evidence found in computers and digital storage media. The goal of computer forensics is to examine digital media in a forensically sound manner with the aim of identifying, preserving, recovering, analyzing and presenting facts and opinions about the information.

Although it is most often associated with the investigation of a wide variety of computer crime, computer forensics may also be used in civil proceedings. The discipline involves similar techniques and principles to data recovery, but with additional guidelines and practices designed to create a legal audit trail.

This workshop will focus both on protecting the corporate client as well as collection for litigation purposes. A more detailed outline will be provided soon.

Time Management

Time management for paralegals is one of the most difficult tasks in a busy law practice. Many paralegals are reluctant to consider developing a time management plan, as if it is somehow beneath them. However, working efficiently and having a good work/life balance doesn't happen by accident. Smart paralegals implement some kind of time management program into their daily routine so they can be better at their jobs while also spending more time doing what they enjoy.

This workshop will give you some excellent tips and tricks on how to keep your self efficient, organized and on time.

Our presenter, Carrie Gillfillan is a legal assistant at Kirkland & Ellis LLP. She graduated from Illinois State University with a degree in History in 2003. Carrie graduated from the Loyola Institute for Paralegal Studies in 2009. She began her legal career at Riordan, McKee & Piper as a law clerk. In May 2010, she started working at Kirkland & Ellis LLP as a project assistant in the Litigation Department.
