State Authorization

State Authorization Status

The U.S. Department of Education requires that any institution offering distance education programs to students outside of its home state must acquire authorization from the states in which students reside.  Regulations vary from state to state.  The list below summarizes Loyola's authorization status in all states plus the District of Columbia, indicating which online courses and programs are available to students from each state.

Prospective Students: If the online program that you are considering requires a professional license in your home state, we urge you to contact the appropriate licensing agency in your state for guidance before embarking on an academic program located outside of your state.

Alabama – Loyola University Chicago has chosen not to seek authorization in Alabama at this time and will therefore not be offering online courses or programs in this state.  As of August 15, 2014, no new Arkansas students may enroll in online programs offered by Loyola University Chicago.

Alabama students who enrolled in an online degree or certificate program prior to this date will be permitted to complete their program.  If you have any questions, please contact the faculty director of your academic program.

Alaska – Loyola University Chicago has been granted an exemption from authorization by the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education to operate a postsecondary educational institution in its state and so may offer all online degree programs, certificate programs and online courses.

Arizona – The Arizona State Board Does not require licensure of distance education programs with no physical presence. LUC is not required to obtain a statement of exemption or waiver from the board, therefore LUC is able to offer all online degree programs, certificate programs and online courses. 

Arkansas – Loyola University Chicago has chosen not to seek authorization in Arkansas at this time and will therefore not be offering online courses or programs in this state.  As of May 5, 2014, no new Arkansas students may enroll in online programs offered by Loyola University Chicago. 

Arkansas students who enrolled in an online degree or certificate program prior to this date will be permitted to complete their program.  If you have any questions, please contact the faculty director of your academic program.

California – Loyola University Chicago is not required to obtain approval or licensure by the State of California and may offer all online degree programs, certificate programs and online courses.

Colorado – Loyola University Chicago is not required to obtain authorization in Colorado for online degree programs, certificate programs, and courses, however, due to the nature of the clinical affiliation agreement, in the School of Nursing, students cannot participate in clinical rotations in the state of Colorado.  Therefore the following online programs will not be available to residents of Colorado: 

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
MSN in Health Systems Management
MSN (CNS) in Oncology Advanced Practice Nursing
MSN in Population-Based Infection Control and Environmental Safety
Post-Master's Certificate in Oncology Advanced Practice Nursing

Connecticut – Loyola University Chicago is not required to obtain authorization from the Connecticut  Office of Higher Education and may offer all online degree programs, certificate programs and online courses to Connecticut residents.

Delaware– Loyola University Chicago is not required to obtain authorization from the Delaware Department of Education and may offer selected online degree programs, certificate programs, and online courses to Delaware residents. 

Due to restrictions on certain programs, however, we will not be offering online programs that require a field experience. 

The following online programs will not be available to residents of Delaware: 

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
Doctor of Bioethics (DBe)
Master's in Public Health (MPH)
MA in Health Care Mission Leadership
MA in Pastoral Studies
MEd in International Higher Education
MSN in Health Systems Management
MSN (CNS) in Oncology Advanced Practice Nursing
MSN in Population-Based Infection Control and Environmental Safety Advanced Practice Nursing
Post-Master's Certificate in Oncology Advanced Practice Nursing

District of Columbia -  Loyola University Chicago is not required to obtain licensure from The Education Licensure Commission and may offer all online degree programs, certificate programs and online courses.

Florida – Loyola University Chicago is not required to be licensed by the Commission for Independent Education of the Florida Department of Education and may therefore offer all online degree programs, certificate programs and online courses to residents of Florida.

Georgia –Loyola University Chicago is not required to obtain approval or licensure by the State of Georgia and may offer all online degree programs, certificate programs and online courses to Georgia residents.

Hawaii – Loyola University Chicago is not required to obtain approval or licensure in Hawaii and may offer all online degree programs, certificate programs, and online courses to Hawaii residents.

Idaho – Loyola University Chicago is not required to register with the State Board of Education in Idaho and may offer all online degree programs, certificate programs and online courses to Idaho residents.

Illinois – Loyola University Chicago is fully accredited by the Higher Education Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, and therefore may offer all degree programming.

Indiana – Loyola University Chicago is authorized by The Indiana Board of Proprietary Education, 101 W. Ohio St., Suite 670, Indianapolis, IN 46204-1984 and may offer all online degree programs, certificate programs and online courses to Indiana residents.

Iowa – Loyola University Chicago is not required to register in Iowa to offer its online programs and courses to Iowa residents.  Due to restrictions on certain online programs, however, the following programs will not be available to residents of Iowa:

MA in Health Care Mission Leadership
MA in Pastoral Studies

Kansas – Loyola University Chicago is not required to apply with the Kansas Board of Regents for a Certificate of Approval and may offer all online degree programs, certificate programs, and online courses to Kansas residents.

Kentucky – Loyola University Chicago is not required to obtain authorization by the State of Kentucky and may offer selected online degree programs, certificate programs, and online courses to Kentucky residents.

Due to restrictions on certain online programs, however, the following programs that require a field experience will not be offered in Kentucky:

Doctorate of Bioethics
Master's in Public Health
MA in Health Care Mission Leadership
MA in Pastoral Studies
MEd in International Higher Education
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)

Louisiana – Application for authorization currently in progress.

Maine - Loyola University Chicago has received an exemption from the State of Maine and will be offering all online programs and courses to residents of Maine.

Maryland – Application for authorization currently in progress.

Due to restrictions on certain online programs, the following programs that require a field experience will not be offered in Maryland:

MA in Pastoral Studies
MEd in International Higher Education

Massachusetts - Application for authorization currently in progress.

Due to restrictions on certain online programs, the following programs that require a field experience will not be offered in Massachusetts:

Michigan – Loyola University Chicago is not required to obtain approval or licensure by the State of Michigan to provide online instruction to Michigan residents. 

Minnesota – Application for authorization currently in progress.

Mississippi – The Mississippi Commission on College Accreditation has found that Loyola University Chicago does not need to seek authorization to offer online programs in the State of Mississippi, therefore Loyola will offer all online degree programs, certificate programs and online courses to Mississippi residents.

Missouri – Loyola University Chicago is not required to obtain approval or licensure from the Missouri Department of Higher Education and may offer all online degree programs, certificate programs, and online courses to Missouri residents.

Montana – Loyola University Chicago has been granted authorization by the Board of Regents of the Montana University System to offer post-secondary degree programs in the State of Montana and may offer all online degree programs, certificate programs and online courses to Montana residents.

Nebraska – Loyola University Chicago is not required to obtain authorization from the Coordinating Commission for Postsecondary Education, State of Nebraska, and may offer all online degree programs, certificate programs and online courses to Nebraska residents.

Nevada – Application for authorization currently in progress.

New Hampshire – Loyola University Chicago is not required to obtain authorization from the New Hampshire Higher Education Commission and may offer selected online degree programs, certificate programs, and online courses to New Hampshire residents. 

Due to restrictions on certain programs we will not be offering online programs from the School of Nursing that require on-site clinicals.  Therefore the following online programs will not be available to residents of New Hampshire: 

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
MSN in Health Systems Management
MSN (CNS) in Oncology Advanced Practice Nursing
MSN in Population-Based Infection Control and Environmental Safety Advanced Practice Nursing
Post-Master's Certificate in Oncology Advanced Practice Nursing

New Jersey – Loyola University Chicago is not required to obtain licensure from the New Jersy Commission on Higher Education  and may offer all online degree programs, certificate programs, and online courses to New Jersey residents.

New Mexico– Application for authorization currently in progress.

Due to restrictions on certain online programs, the following programs that require a field experience will not be offered in New Mexico:

New York– Loyola University Chicago is not required  to apply for permission to operate in New York and therefore can offer all online degree and certificate programs with the exceptions of:

MSN (CNS) in Oncology Advanced Practice Nursing
Post-Master's Certificate in Oncology Advanced Practice Nursing

North Carolina– Loyola University Chicago is not required to obtain authorization by The University of North Carolina Board of Governors and may offer selected online degree programs, certificate programs, and online courses to North Carolina residents. 

Due to restrictions on certain programs, however, we will not be offering online programs that require a field experience.  Therefore the following online programs will not be available to residents of North Carolina: 

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
Doctor of Bioethics (DBe)
Master's in Public Health (MPH)

North Dakota – Loyola University Chicago is exempt in North Dakota and may offer all online degree programs, certificate programs and online courses to North Dakota residents.

Ohio Application for authorization currently in progress.

Due to restrictions on certain online programs, the following programs that require a field experience will not be offered in Ohio:

Oklahoma – Loyola University Chicago is not required to obtain authorization from the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education and may offer all online degree programs, certificate programs, and online courses to Oklahoma residents.

Oregon – Application for authorization currently in progress.

Pennsylvania –Loyola University Chicago is registered in Pennsylvania as an out-of-state distance education provider and may offer all online degree programs, certificate programs, and online courses to Pennsylvania residents.

Rhode Island – Loyola University is not required to obtain authorization from the Rhode Island Board of Governors for Higher Education and may offer all online degree programs, certificate programs, and online courses to Rhode Island residents.

South Carolina – Loyola University Chicago is not required to apply for licensure from the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education and may offer all online degree programs, certificate programs, and online courses to South Carolina residents.

South Dakota – Application for authorization currently in progress.

Tennessee – Loyola University Chicago is not required to obtain authorization from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission and may offer all online degree programs, certificate programs, and online courses to Tennessee residents.

Texas – Loyola University Chicago offers all online degree and certificate programs and online courses in Texas. Loyola is “excluded” from requiring exemption or authorization from the Texas Workforce Commission.  Loyola is not currently required to be authorized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Loyola  is not regulated in Texas under Chapter 132 of the Texas Education Code.

Utah – Loyola University Chicago has been granted authorization by the Utah Division of Consumer Protection and may offer all online degree programs, certificate programs and online courses to Utah residents.

Vermont – Loyola University Chicago is not required to obtain authorization from the Vermont State Board of Education and may offer all online degree programs, certificate programs, and online courses to Vermont residents.

Virginia – Loyola University Chicago is not required to obtain certification from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia  and may offer all online degree programs, certificate programs, and online courses to Virginia residents.

Washington – Application for authorization currently in progress.

The following online programs will not be available to residents of Washington:

West Virginia – Application for authorization currently in progress.

Wisconsin – Loyola University Chicago has been granted authorization by the Wisconsin Educational Approval Board and may offer all online degree programs, certificate programs and online courses to Wisconsin residents.

Wyoming – Loyola University Chicago has been granted authorization by the Wyoming Department of Education and may offer all online degree programs, certificate programs and online courses to Wyoming residents.
