Loyola Senior Ligin Solamen Reflects on Summer REU Experience
Ligin Solamen took the time to share her experiences through Rutgers's summer REU program for Cellular Bioengineering, and how it has influenced her education and research career. The following is her account:
This past summer I participated in the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program for Cellular Bioengineering at Rutgers University. During the ten week research intensive program, I worked with Dr. Mark Pierce from the Department of Biomedical Engineering. We worked on developing a wide field-imaging device capable of determining lipid concentration of tissue. By using light scattering and absorption properties, we were able to test the system on engineered tissue. Aside from participating in cutting edge research, the program offered an entrepreneurship and innovation component where we learned about how to take our research and translate it into something that could be commercialized and marketable. Rutgers University was ideally located, so students had opportunities to visit metropolitan cities nearby, specifically New York City and Philadelphia. This experience allowed me to meet great people, network with experts in the field, and have the opportunity to conduct pioneering research.
