Product Description:

Angel, ca. 1640
Lindenwood with traces of polychromy
Gift of Mrs. Howell Howard 1977-21

This joyful angel is one of a pair by the German sculptor Martin Zurn (1585/90 - after 1665).  For much of his life, he collaborated with his father and his brother Michael on a number of grand sculpted altarpieces.  Many were richly painted and gilded, with a profusion of angels tumbling from heaven, ecstatic in revelation of the divine on earth.  From the angel's theatrical pose, we may assume it came from such a structure; designed to lead the viewer's eye towards the focal point of either a heavenly being or a tabernacle containing the consecrated Host.
