Mary Burns is the Academic Director of the On-line Masters in Jurisprudence Degree in Children’s Law and Policy at Loyola. Since 2004 Mary has taught family law in Loyola’s on-site Master’s in Jurisprudence degree program in Children’s Law and teaches the family law course as one of the electives for the on-line Children’s Law and Policy program. Prior to coming to Loyola she was with the Cook County Public Guardian’s Office for 17 years, as Supervisor of the Domestic Relations Division, representing children in divorce and parentage cases, and as a lead attorney at the Juvenile Court, representing children in abuse and neglect proceedings. She is a member of the committee in the Domestic Relations Division of the Circuit Court that advises the Presiding Judge on applicants seeking approval to be included on the roster of attorneys the court may appoint to represent children in contested custody cases. A 1984 graduate of Northwestern University School of Law, she was recently honored by Northwestern Law School for a lifetime career in public service.
Prior to attending law school, Mary was a member of the humanities faculty at Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, Indiana, and later earned a Master’s degree from the Divinity School at the University of Chicago.
