Law Librarians to Conduct Legal Research Workshop Series

The Law Library will be running a series of lunchtime legal research workshops during the weeks of April 3 and April 10. If you need a refresher on Illinois legal research, tips on advanced searching techniques, or if you’d like to learn about conducting business and company research or about researching dockets, we’ve got you covered!

Descriptions of each of the workshops (along with links to sign up to attend) are listed below. Lunch will be provided at each of the workshops, but space is limited, so please sign up as soon as possible if you are interested in attending any (or all) of these workshops. Illinois Legal Research

Tuesday April 4, Noon – 1:00 p.m., Law Library Room 414

Are you working over the summer in a firm or agency that concentrates on Illinois law? If so you should attend this session on Illinois legal resources. This brief session is intended to refresh or reinforce students’ knowledge of primary sources of Illinois law, teach students about secondary sources unique to Illinois and how to locate them, and provide students with tips on conducting cost-effective legal research.

Advanced Research Tips

Thursday April 6, Noon – 1:00 p.m., Law Library Room 414

Hone your research skills by using better Boolean searches, fields, and filters. With these techniques you will spend less time looking through irrelevant hits in your search results.

Business and Company Research

Monday, April 10, Noon – 1:00 p.m., Law Library Room 414

Do you know the difference between a 10-K and a 10-Q? Do you know how to locate a sample Illinois general partnership agreement? Summer associates and new attorneys are frequently asked to conduct business intelligence research and locate business forms. In this workshop, you will learn a variety of skills, including how to use Bloomberg Law’s business research tools and the IICLE Smartbooks database to identify Illinois business forms.

Docket Research Workshop

Wednesday, April 12, Noon – 1:00 p.m., Law Library Room 414

Do you need to find out information on a pending case? Do you need to find a sample of a brief, motion, or other court filing? If so, you should attend this session on researching court dockets. In this workshop, you will learn about the different resources available for finding and accessing docket materials.
