1L Advocacy Requirements
Trial Advocacy and Appellate Advocacy
All first year students are required to attend two advocacy events during the course of the year in order to expose them to various aspects of the litigation process and prepare them for upper level courses.
First, each student must fulfill the 1L Trial Advocacy Requirement by serving as a juror at one of the final trials of the upperclassmen in the Trial Practice courses. 1Ls are given an opportunity to observe a full-length trial, and to render a verdict. Students have several dates each year on which they may complete this requirement - final trials are held in November, January, April and May. To sign up for a Jury Duty date, click here.
The Jury Duty Dates for the 2016-2017 academic year are:
-Saturday, November 12, 2016 at 8:30am-1:00pm
-Thursday, November 17, 2016 at 5:45pm-8:30pm
-Saturday, January 14, 2017 at 8:30am-1:00pm
-Thursday, April 20, 2017 at 5:45pm-8:30pm
-Saturday, April 22, 2017; 8:30am-1:00pm
There are limits to how many students may sign up for each day, and all students are required to complete this activity, so please sign up for a date as soon as possible.
Second, each student must fulfill the 1L Appellate Advocacy Requirement by observing one round of an appellate argument or serving as a bailiff at an approved moot court competition. This allows first year students to observe the appellate process.
You may fulfill this appellate advocacy requirement by serving as a bailiff at the Windy City Moot Court Regional Tournament on:
-Friday, November 11, 2016 at 1:00pm, 2:30pm or 4:00pm
-Saturday, November 12, 2016 at 9:00am, 10:30am, 1:00pm or 2:30pm

1Ls may also fulfill this requirement by acting as a bailiff for a round or by observing the Final Round of the Loyola Law Intra-School Moot Court Competition as second year students compete against each other in rounds of oral arguments. This competition is scheduled for Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at the Dirksen Federal Building (219 South Dearborn) and Saturday, February 25, 2017 at the Corboy Law Center (25 East Pearson).
To sign-up to bailiff, please go to your TWEN page and add 2017 Loyola Intraschool to your course list. Once it is added, you can access the sign-up page, which includes the times available for both Wednesday and Saturday.
The Final Round will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 12:15pm in the Power Rogers & Smith Ceremonial Courtroom, Corboy Law Center, 10th floor (Room 1040).
A final opportunity to fulfill this requirement will be to observe a practice round of the Jessup International Law Moot Court Team on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 from 5pm-6pm in Room 1103.
Please note that your 1L class rank will be withheld until both advocacy requirements (trial and appellate) are completed.
