Researching Corporate Legal Opportunities
Many students hope at some point in their careers to work “in house” at a corporation. While these positions are difficult to get right out of law school (generally, you get your training at a law firm and develop an expertise in an area of law useful to a company before going in house), many corporation legal departments will take interns over the summer.
One of the best resources for finding the legal department of corporations in Chicago is a hard-copy resource that you need to come to our office to take advantage of – Sullivan’s Law Directory – which has a section in the back for Corporation Law Departments that will give you the correct contact for networking and sending materials.
Crain’s Book of Lists is another great resource. We've put the 100 Largest Public Companies in the Chicago Area online for you, but see the hard copy in our office for additional lists of interest.
Be sure to check the website of any company you are specifically interested in – some list internship opportunities for students on a Career section of their web site.
Diverse students interested in corporate work should check out the Association of Corporate Counsel's Minority Law Student Summer Internship Program on our non-firm diversity opportunities page.
