Information for Applicants: Non-U.S. Citizens/Non-U.S Permanent Residents

An applicant who is neither a U.S. citizen nor U.S. permanent resident does not have the eligibility to apply for federal educational loans. Applicants who fall into these categories should not fill out a FAFSA form.

However, several private (non-federal) educational loans allow application by these students. A number of them as for a U.S. citizen or permanent resident to co-sign the loan. The co-signer must provide a U.S. social security number, have a satifactory credit history and demonstrate suffient income to repay credit obligations, including the educational loan. The student applicant should also provide a U.S. social security number, if possible. With a creditworthy co-signer, a student can borrow up to the cost of attendance for the academic year to which they are appluomg less any other financial aid received.

Additionally, there are private educational loans which may be available to international students who have at least a minimum credit score and three years of established U.S. credit history in their name, including at least four non-student loan trades, one of which has been open for 36 months, without a co-signer.
