"The Heart of the Matter: Children and Divorce"

May 24 -28, 2004 (week-long course)

An interdisciplinary program for social workers, psychologists, lawyers, educators, child development specialists and child advocates.

During the Summer Institute--offered as a one-day continuing education program and as a week-long course--students will engage in an interdisciplinary examination of the meaning of "best interest of the child" when a child's parents decide to end their relationship. Is it possible to structure a child-centered legal and psychosocial approach to decision making when parents are divorcing? What would such a system look like? How can it be realized? How can lawyers and judges, child development specialists, social workers, mental health professionals and others work to design such an approach?

Topics to be covered include:

The Children's Summer Institute is presented by Loyola University Chicago.s Schools of Law, Social Work, and Education, and its Department of Psychology, and the Erikson Institute for Early Childhood Development.
