Upcoming Public Interest Events

On the third Thursday of each month at noon, join us for a discussion of public interest              topics.  We will have practitioners come speak about their work as well as other students sharing their public interest experiences.  For the first lunch on Sept. 18th, we will hear from 2L and 3L students about the work they did this summer and how they obtained funding for their work.

CLAIM Family Law Clinic volunteers conduct intake interviews and give advice on family law matters for mothers in Cook County Jail. Volunteers work in cooperation with CLAIM staff attorneys. CLAIM provides a guideline for interview questions, information about making attorney visits at the jail, and a list of referrals for programs that help women build stronger cases.

Lawyers and 711 License eligible students interested in working with incarcerated mothers should attend. Lawyers can earn 4.5 MCLE credits (including .75 Professional Responsibility hours).

The time commitment to be a CLAIM volunteer is 4-5 hours per month.
This program is co-sponsored by the Women's Law Society.

Date & time for this event are TBD.

The Convocation is to recognize outstanding achievements in public service and pro bono service by members of the bar. Attendance at the Convocation is required for all first-year students, full-time and part-time, as a part of the law school's goal of acquainting all students with the unmet legal needs of the poor and with the obligation of all lawyers to address that critical societal need.

An award is presented at the Convocation to one or more legal professionals who have devoted their career to helping the under-represented. In most years, a comparable award is presented to another lawyer who has provided substantial pro bono services to the community and to the profession. Through the student fundraising efforts of the Public Interest Law Society (PILS) at the annual Public Service Auction, Loyola offers grants to support students who wish to do public interest legal work during the summer months. The Auction is the biggest student event of the year, raising $20,000 last year alone. Notably, the PILS Auction is a unique event for Loyola because it is entirely student run and student organized.

Date & time for this event are TBD.

The Midwest Public Interest Law Career Conference (MPILCC) enables employers from public interest and government organizations and J.D. students to gather for a day of interviews and informal networking.  Each year, the MPILCC Conference attracts nearly 50 employers for on-site interviews, Table Talk (an informal networking session), or resume solicitation. From an average eleven hundred student registrants, about 250 students representing about 40 law schools attend the conference. The conference is free to employers and students.
