Purchasing Wireless Equipment
SCOPE
Covers all groups within Loyola who wish to provide wireless network connectivity for their area.
PURPOSE
To ensure that the correct hardware is purchased and installed in such a way that the wireless access point can be centrally managed by ITS. Also to ensure that appropriate steps are taken to properly secure wireless access to the network to decrease the risk of accidental information disclosure via a wireless connection.
POLICY
- Students living in residence halls - Students living in residence halls are allowed to connect wireless access points and routers to the network. These devices should be configured according to the instructions found at https://netreg1.luc.edu/registration/StudentRouter.html.
- Non-students living in residence halls - Non-students who are living in residence halls are allowed to connect wireless access points and routers to the network. These devices should be installed and configured by an ITS technician. The ITS technician will enable WPA or WEP (WPA preferably), change the SSID, and change the administrator password for the access point or router.
- Other situations - Any other situations, including non-students working in the residence halls, will be handled as projects run by the Network Services group of ITS. Any additional wireless devices that are connected to the network will be purchased through and installed by Network Services, to ensure that the devices are properly configured, able to be remotely managed, and appropriately scaled.
