Rerouting your e-mail

Web based e-mail (Imap at Loyola)

Because electronic mail is such an integral part of the education experience, Loyola provides stable, reliable e-mail service for all students, faculty, and staff.

In addition to using e-mail to communicate with family and friends, students will find they are using e-mail more and more as a routine adjunct to their courses. Faculty communicate with their students frequently in e-mail, sometimes sending class notes and assignments, even conducting informal office hours. They may set up shared mail groups to encourage offline discussion of topics and request students to submit papers and even tests via e-mail.

   About GroupWise Electronic Mail

GroupWise is the name of a network-based electronic mail program that provides a wide range of messaging and organizational features. It is fully supported by the University and by Information Technology Services. GroupWise communicates well with other e-mail platforms and can be used to send mail and files to colleagues on-campus and externally via the Internet.

To Access Your GroupWise Account

Through Loyola Software
Although GroupWise is an option in the Common Desktop Applications folder of most Loyola computers (found in the Start bar under Loyola Software), you will not be able to access and use it unless you have first been issued a Computer ID.  Computer IDs are issued automatically to all new students and faculty. This ID provides access to all networked Core services and software, including GroupWise e-mail. If you do not think you have an ID, or if you have forgotten your password, contact the ITS Support Center at 8-4ITS, or 773-508-7190.

GroupWise on the Web

Staff and faculty can access their GroupWise e-mail accounts via the Web, either from a networked campus computer or from a home computer. The Web version has nearly all of the features of the network version. The URL for GroupWise WebAccess is https://webaccess.luc.edu/gw/webacc. Before you can use GroupWise on the Web, you will need to set a password in your GroupWise mailbox while using a networked, on-campus computer. Login to a Loyola computer and open GroupWise; choose Tools/Options/Security and enter the password of your choice.

You can also connect from Loyola's Home Page.   In Loyola Links, choose GroupWise Web Access.

   Web-based E-Mail

There are a number of Web-based products -- such as Hotmail, Yahoo, or Juno -- that people find easy to use and adequate for their e-mail needs.  Imap Mail, for example, is Internet-based mail used by people who find it convenient not to leave the Web in order to check their mail.   In addition, Internet service providers such as AOL provide their own mail service.  Whenever you make the decision to use a non-University mail account as your primary mail account, be sure to reroute mail from your University mailbox to your preferred account.

      Re-routing Your Loyola E-Mail

The University, including faculty, administrative staff, and most students, communicate almost exclusively through the Loyola e-mail system.

  • If an instructor sends out an assignment or announcement to his/her students, it will be to the students' University mail accounts.
  • When academic departments or University administrative offices send out grades or course schedules or class location changes or events announcements or student security alerts, it will be to the students' University mail accounts.
  • When the University sends out staff and faculty news or alerts, it will be to staff/faculty University mail accounts.
  • When staff and faculty communicate and exchange files with co-workers, it will be to staff/faculty University mail accounts.

If you do not read your Loyola e-mail regularly, you will miss important information.

So . . . you can either:

  • check your GroupWise Inbox at least once every day, or
  • have your mail rerouted to the Inbox of the mail program you prefer to use.

If your choice is the latter, follow the directions here to use the Personal Account Manager (PAM)  to re-route your Loyola mail to your preferred e-mail account. If you have any questions or problems using the PAM system, contact the  ITS Support Center at 8-4ITS (on campus) or 773-508-7190 (off campus).

NOTE: Mail will be redirected to your new address beginning with your request. Any mail sent to your University mailbox prior to your request for redirection will remain in there.
