There are 3 possible mechanisms by which initial research proposals involving human subjects are reviewed: exempt review (section A), full review (section B), or expedited review (section C). The first mechanism, exempt review, is conducted by the Research Services Compliance Manager. The latter two, full and expedited review, are conducted by the IRB.
All review mechanisms are described in detail below. Investigators are responsible for ensuring that research, whether externally funded or not, involving human participants in any capacity is reviewed and approved via the appropriate review mechanism. If, after reading the descriptions of each review mechanism, investigators have questions regarding the appropriate procedure to follow, they should consult with the IRB Chair or Compliance Manager.
