Academic Advising

In its commitment to provide high-quality service to students, IPS places great emphasis on academic advising.

Faculty advisors are assigned upon acceptance into a program. They are available to discuss with prospective students the various offerings of the Institute. Appointments can help clarify personal and career goals and pertinence of IPS programs.

The open nature of the pastoral studies program and of the programs pursued by special students makes consultation with an advisor essential. Advisors do not make decisions on behalf of the participants, but help them to clarify their learning goals, develop an overall strategy for their time of study, and select courses best suited to achieving those ends.

Newly accepted participants in these programs will receive material to help with planning before they arrive on campus. Participants are urged to consult an advisor to review this initial planning and to further develop it in subsequent semesters. In anticipation of graduating, participants are also asked to do a written or oral exit interview to conclude their IPS experience and to provide feedback to the IPS administration.

To schedule an appointment with an advisor, please call the IPS office.

Accreditation

The Institute of Pastoral Studies and Loyola University Chicago is accredited by the North Central Association.

"In the United States, accreditation is voluntarily sought by institutions and is conferred by non-governmental bodies—membership organizations that accredit and thereby grant membership to educational institutions." These words, from the North Central Association's Website, present the essence of accreditation in the United States. In contrast to the practice in some other countries where the government provides accreditation, in the U.S. it is provided through a network of peer professional groups.

Graduation

It is the student's responsibility to apply for graduation in the beginning of the Fall semester in which the student will complete all degree requirements. The university has only one commencement each year. Students who complete degree requirements at the end of a Summer Session may participate in the Spring commencement ceremony; however, they will not officially be considered graduated until all degree requirements are met.

Housing

Housing both on and off campus is available to Institute participants. Specific information about summer housing options is available from the IPS office.

Loyola offers graduate student housing, both at Lake Shore Campus and at Water Tower Campus.  For more information click here to visit the Loyola University Residence Life website.
