WSGS Fellow to Perform at the Next Theater

The Graduate School is pleased to invite you to attend Bodies of Memory, a collaborative performance written and directed by Ginny Sykes. Ginny is an MA student in Loyola's Women's Studies and Gender Studies Program, and a Community and Global Stewards Fellow. Her project will premier at Next Theater on May 4th and 5th.

This project is partially funded by a Community and Global Stewards Fellowship from the Graduate School of Loyola University, Chicago, and a Mary Griffin Scholarship Award from Loyola's Women's Studies and Gender Studies Program.

Says the artist, Ginny Sykes:

“Courses in art history, American history, feminist theory, literature, film, and theatre have strengthened and deepened my commitment to feminism. Bodies of Memory, my final project.is grounded in these intersecting disciplines and my own artistic practice. WSGS has supported and advised me during my two years of work creating a collaborative performance work. Featuring six dancers, original music, and video projections, it will premiere May 4th and 5th, 2013. Performance as a scholarly category is being more fully established within the academy as a discipline of real scholarship, and I am deepening my authorial voice as an artist.

"The performance is inspired by my family history, and my desire to question whether there has been ‘generational progress’ in terms of feminism’s impact on women’s lives. I explore in this work several generations of women through narrative dance. As the director and creator of the work, I am one of these women.  My piece looks at the relationships of three sisters and their mother and the intersection of their experiences, memories, and desires. Paternal suicide is a rupturing event that calls into question patriarchal authority within the family, and by extension, challenges the rules governing these women’s lives within the larger cultural context of the 20th century.”
