LUMAkids: Facilitating Thinking through the Arts

The Loyola University Museum of Art (LUMA) and CCSE have joined forces to develop a new program to use visual art to teach critical thinking. Starting with an approach piloted at Harvard University, the LUMAkids program focuses on first creating classroom cultures that support the development of critical thinking skills in both the teachers and students. LUMAkids is grounded in many of the skills that are found in the Common Core Standards. Using the the LUMA permanent collection, students and educators explore examples of visual art while developing critical thinking skills within curricular content areas.

Currently, LUMAkids is being piloted in two urban Catholic schools. Teachers received professional development in this approach and are using it within their classrooms.
