Community Engagement Award for Innovation in Sustainability
“The great challenge of the twenty-first century is to raise people everywhere to a decent standard of living while preserving as much of the rest of life as possible.” ~ Edmund O Wilson
The Loyola University Community Engagement Award for Innovation in Sustainability is given to the student or group of students who participated in a service-learning course or academic internship course and who most clearly represent the university’s values around creating sustainable opportunities, attitudes, and habits in society. One of the greatest challenges facing modern society is how we can live together in a way that gives and sustains life now and for future generations to come on a planet that is increasingly burdened by human activity and consumption. Sustainable practices require that we consider the economy, environment and society in our actions. The Jesuit tradition asks us to live in solidarity with others. This means we must take into consideration not just our needs but the needs of others and of future generations.
The Innovation in Sustainability Award is presented to the student(s) who clearly address questions of sustainability in their service-learning experience or academic internship. How does the experience build and support sustainable practices, attitudes and habits in our local and global communities? The service-learning or academic internship experience itself can be that place where innovative practices in sustainable living are present, but exploration of these questions can also take place during project preparation, reflection, or extended learning stages. The following criteria will guide selection for the Innovation in Sustainability Award:
- Direct and intentional academic learning connects were made to the experience.
- The project contributes to sustainability of the community in some way.
- The project participates in/builds capacity of a partner organization to develop or strengthen sustainable practices.
- The project represents an innovative approach to solving complex problems.
