- Summer in Chicago
Tuition, Fees & Books
Summer in Chicago is a time when students can study in the Intensive English Summer program at Loyola and also enjoy the cultural, social, and recreational opportunities that the city affords. Loyola Beach, for example, is only a five-minute walk from the Lake Shore Campus where Loyola's summer ESL program classes are held.

The ESL Summer Program offers intensive study of all language skills, with an emphasis on academic preparation. In our small classes, students receive individual support and often develop lasting friendships with classmates and faculty. Additionally, students develop technological skills by learning how to create PowerPoint presentations and navigate Blackboard, Loyola's online course management system. Students will also expand their cultural awareness by exploring the world-class city of Chicago on class field trips.
The ESL Summer Program is designed for serious students with at least a high-intermediate level of English language skill. The ESL Program does not offer beginning level courses. All students are placed in classes according to level. Morning classes meet Monday - Thursday; afternoon classes meet Monday - Wednesday.
Students who come to the U.S. for the main purpose of studying must get an F-1 visa. International students with an F-1 visa are required to study full-time. In the summer, full-time is 3 classes: 2 in the morning and 1 in the afternoon. U.S. citizens and immigrants may study part-time.
To create a supportive class environment, we have instituted a series of Principles and Policies for Academic Excellence to be observed in all ESL Program classes.
While studying in the ESL Program helps students prepare for degree work in English, it does not guarantee admission into a degree program. If you are interested in joining a Loyola degree program after the ESL Program, please contact Undergraduate Admission or Graduate Enrollment for more information. Admission to a degree program requires a separate application process.
