Mission Statement

Academic Coaching

Academic Coaching is an on-site high school intervention that offers at-risk high school students the academic, social and emotional support they need to matriculate successfully into high school and to realistically envision their future transition to college or productive workforce employment.  Academic Coaching also offers highly qualified college students an opportunity to earn money as they share their time and talents with students in academically challenged urban high schools.

Academic Coaching facilitates small, engaged learning environments so students are exposed to enriched high school content, expansive resources, and motivational encouragement. Highly qualified college students hired to serve as academic coaches provide “near-peer” guidance in the areas of basic content, study skills and relevant high school issues. Academic coaches travel to identified urban high schools on Saturday mornings to study for three hours with participating students in a 1:4 ratio. The relationships that develop between academic coaches and their students often yield life-changing lessons for both groups.
