Official Transcripts
Applicants must submit official transcripts for all undergraduate and graduate work. To be eligible for admission, your transcript must show an earned bachelor's degree and a master's degree or a master's degree in progress. Certified copies of transcripts are acceptable; faxed copies of transcripts are not considered official. If you attended Loyola University Chicago previously, you do not need to request transcripts; we have them on record.

Transcripts must show a GPA of at least a 3.0. In exceptional cases, applicants whose undergraduate GPA is below 3.0 may be admitted. Each program area gives meaningful consideration to the applicant's graduate GPA, GRE scores, recommendations, professional experience and reasons for pursuing a graduate program, as well as to the diversity of the student body.

Three Letters of Recommendation

A Personal Statement
Your statement should be 1-3 pages, and you should describe:

1. Academic and research interests, as well as professional goals

2. Life experiences that have influenced your view of social justice

3. Describe how you have demonstrated transformational leadership throughout your P-12 experience.

Standardized Test Scores
Applicants must submit general GRE scores. Loyola’s GRE institution code is 1412.

Illinois Professional Educator License
with Teaching and Principal Endorsements

Proof of a Professional Educator License with teaching and principal (or general administrative) endorsements should be submitted. If a test of basic skills was not required or waived at the time of licensure, proof of passing scores for the Test of Academic Proficiency (TAP) are also required. A passing score must be submitted no later than second semester registration to continue in the program. Candidates may apply using the ACT/SAT scores in LIEU of the TAP with an ACT composite of 22 plus the writing or SAT composite in mathematics and critical reading of 1030 plus the writing.

  • Please use these instructions for submitting ACT/SAT scores in lieu of the TAP.
  • To submit proof of passing scores an Education Licensure Information System (ELIS) screen shot must be submitted as part of the admission process. You can access the information by creating an ELIS account. You will then be able to view your testing information and future licensure information with the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE).

Resume
Your resume should highlight work experience relevant to your professional goals and indicate a current Assistant Principal position in Chicago Public Schools along with at least two years administrative experience and a minimum of two years teaching experience on a teaching license.

Application Fee
A $50 application fee is required for applications submitted by mail. If you complete the online application form, the application fee is waived.

Interview
The admissions committee may request an interview. Interviews are by invitation only.
If invited to a half-day interview, it will include a PowerPoint portfolio presentation demonstration impact on student achievement, real-time analysis of an instructional video, and an on-site writing sample in response to an educational leadership prompt. If invited to campus, an email will be sent with specific instructions prior to the interview.

1. Why are you applying to the doctoral program in counseling psychology at Loyola University Chicago?

2. What research and clinical experiences have you had that would prepare you for scientist-practitioner training in counseling psychology?

4. What is your view or definition of social justice? (We are more interested in learning how you view social justice than in knowing how your life experiences have influenced your view.)

Interview
The admissions committee may request an interview. Interviews are by invitation only.
If invited to interview, a research paper is required to be submitted as part of the admission process. This requirement is intended to provide the faculty with critical information on one’s ability to frame, research, analyze, and offer a persuasive written account on a current higher education issue of one’s own choosing. Faculty selection of interviewees is made around mid-January. If invited to campus, (1) an email will be sent with specific instructions about the structure and focus of the paper (2) with two weeks to write and electronically submit the research paper.
