Safe Space Training Program

The Safe Space Training Program has made a return to the Loyola University Chicago campus through the Department of Student Diversity & Multicultural Affairs.  The new revised program is more interactive and offers many resources and ideas on how to be an effective ally.  Safe Space is a program that strives to provide a more hospital  environment for LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Affectionate, Transgender and Queer) people by establishing an identifiable  network of people who can provide support, information, and a safe haven to an LGBTQ person within the University community.

Sharon Chia Claros, the department's Coordinator for Diversity and Social Justice Education, identified three goals that the training plans to meet:

  • To provide evidence of LGBTQ support by displaying a sign as a visible symbol of personal commitment. (Safe Space Sticker)
  • To identify and mobilize a network of people who are empathetic and knowledgeable about LGBTQ issues and concerns.  The Safe Space training will emphasize knowledge about campus and community resources as well as counseling/helping skills.
  • To reduce the fear of reprisal and discrimination of LGBTQ people within the Loyola University Chicago community.
If you are interested in scheduling a training for your student leaders or your department, please email Sharon Chia Claros at sclaros@luc.edu. Trainings are 3 hours long and are capped off to 20 people. A meal will be provided as part of the program.
