About

Julia Filson plays horn with the Gaudete Brass, is on faculty at Loyola University Chicago, and is Principal Horn with the Lancaster Festival Orchestra.

As a member of Gaudete Brass, Julia is a recording artist with Cedille Records, and is in residence at Roosevelt University. The group regularly commissions prominent composers and collaborates with up-and-coming composers at universities such as Columbia College, Roosevelt University, and SUNY Fredonia. The group has presented educational masterclasses at schools such as the Eastman School of Music, Illinois State University, The Juilliard School, and Arizona State University to name a few. The group also performs at prominent conferences such as the International Trumpet Guild Conference, Chamber Music America Conference, International Women’s Brass Conference, and the Midwest Clinic. In 2012 the group released an album of commissioned works called Chicago Moves on the Cedille Records Label to great acclaim. Julia looks forward to their next recording project which will include works by Jonathan Newman, Steven Bryant, David Sampson, and others.

As a freelance musician, Julia’s engagements have been with the Ensemble Dal Niente, Fifth House Ensemble, MusicNOW series, the Contempo Ensemble, China National Symphony Orchestra, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Aspen Music Festival’s New Horizon's Fellow, and guest Principal Horn with Pine Mountain Music Festival. Her diverse experiences comprise of performing on the Natural Horn, recording for Major Motion films, and performing with artists from Emmanuel Ax to Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. She has been a featured soloist at the Lancaster Festival, and soloist with DePaul University's Ensemble 20+ on György Ligeti’s Hamburg Concerto. Julia received her B.M. from Indiana University, and M.M. with distinction from DePaul University in Horn Performance. Mentors and teachers include Cliff Colnot, Jon Boen, Jeff Nelsen, and Robert Lauver.
