Community Holiday Party Beneficiary Spotlight: Care for Real

Care for Real

Care for Real, a 501(c) (3) not for profit organization, was established in 1970 by Rev. William Johnson of the Episcopal Church of the Atonement, Rabbi Herman Schaalman of Emanuel Congregation and other members of the Edgewater Clerical Rabbinical Association. For more than forty years, Care for Real  has carried out its mission of helping the members of the Edgewater community by providing food, clothing and counseling services to those in need.

Care for Real offers a range of services to its clients including an on-site food distribution program, deliveries to the homebound, a free clothes closet, a pet pantry, a library, arts workshops and a case management program to help clients connect with other services they may need.  Care for Real also manages an employment program known as “Putting Edgewater to Work”.   Launched in 2011, this initiative has grown to support over 300 clients seeking employment and providing them with training courses and the tools to self-stabilize to help ensure they live a more economically secure life.

By the close of 2012, Care for Real will have experienced more than 55,000 client visits (a significant increase from the less than 10,000 only five years ago).  Additionally, Care for Real distributes more than 750,000 pounds of food annually. Relying on the generosity of neighbors and the efforts of dedicated volunteers, Care for Real is funded through monetary contributions, in-kind donations and grants from individual supporters, the religious community, local businesses and foundations.  Care for Real has become an invaluable resource to the community. As the Holiday Season presents an even greater challenge for those in need, Care for Real will be one of the beneficiaries of our Community Holiday Party’s canned food drive.
