About

Teaching Interests

My mission as a chemistry instructor is to teach what I know to be important about chemistry in today’s society in ways that today’s students will understand.  My career goals involve effective instruction within chemistry and its inter-disciplinary boundaries.

AdditionalTeaching Interests

Tai Chi:  Beginning Instruction and Practice, Yang Style, Short Form.  “Be still as a mountain, move like a river.... Stand like a balance, rotate like a wheel.”  This class focuses on the development of kinesthetic body knowledge and the integration of mind and body.

Science, Technology, and Humanity:  In this course you can expand your understanding of science as a human endeavor, you can increase your knowledge of technology achieved through science, you can evaluate the effects of science and technology on society, and you can develop a considered approach to understanding and evaluating global scientific issues.  It is with optimism that that I think you will also come to appreciate the beauty of the science and technology’s place in it.

Women’s Studies: One of the goals of this course is to develop a personal philosophy of feminism.  We will use Tobias’s book The Faces of Feminism to examine some of the history of the women’s movement toward equality, and to locate our sense of feminist identity within this history, and to think about how we can positively influence our present society.   We will read Keller’s biography of Barbara McClintock, a Nobel Prize winning scientist who pioneered the field of genetics and thrived professionally in a scientific culture that marginalized female scientists.  Additionally, we will look at some issues from feminism that have been applied to the domain of science.
