Dean's Welcome
Reinhard Andress, Ph.D., College of Arts and Sciences Dean
Welcome to the Web site of the College of Arts and Sciences!
With a venerable history of 140 years and as the largest of the University’s ten schools and colleges, we are dedicated to the Jesuit tradition of a transformative education in the vast disciplines of the humanities, natural and social sciences. We encourage our students to acquire, experience, and reflect on knowledge, and then decide what it means for them in terms of individual choice, action, commitment, and service to others.
This process of knowing is facilitated through the University’s Core Curriculum, which resides largely in the College, and through the wide variety of majors and minors offered in our many departments and interdisciplinary programs. The excellence of these programs is attributable to our first-class faculty and its broad range of teaching, research, and service interests. The College provides unique opportunities for students to develop a life of the mind that will help them to understand the world and to face the many challenges ahead in their personal and professional lives. “Preparing people to lead extraordinary lives” is a central part of our mission.
Please take a closer look at our many fine programs and contact us for more information!
