John Murphy, S.J.
After high school in San Francisco--my place of birth--I attended Georgetown University after which I went to the Navy Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island where I was commissioned on the day that President Kennedy was assassinated. In 1970 I entered the Society of Jesus and have spent most of my ministry teaching high school English with the exception of four years as principal of Bellarmine College Prep in San Jose, CA. Responding to a suggestion from my provincial, I went to Rome, Italy and to the North American College serving as Director of Spiritual Life. My ministry continued in the role of formator as I became tertian instructor for the California Province of the Society of Jesus. Now I am happily assigned to the campus ministry team at Loyola where I am very happy to be missioned.
Two fun facts about Fr. Murphy: He have been through the Panama Canal thirty-eight times when he was in the Navy. John sang for President and Mrs. Kennedy as part of the Georgetown Men's Glee Club on the night before he was inaugurated while a sophomore at Georgetown University.
