The Terry Student Center, the most extensive student gathering space in Water Tower Campus history, was made possible through the largest naming gift ever at WTC by John and Terese Mulkern Terry, both of the class of 1959. The Terrys met while attending classes downtown and wanted to help “give a sense of community” to the Water Tower Campus.
“As students, John and I remember celebrating the annual Mass with Mr. & Mrs . Frank J. Lewis who donated LUC’s Lewis Towers building,” commented Terese Terry. “We were all impressed with their generosity and commitment to Loyola and each other. Their gift of Lewis Towers was critically important to our getting a great college education. We hope that by getting to know a little more about our family, today’s Loyola students can feel that same sense of connectedness to those who have gone before them.”
The Terrys have four children, including Michael and Deirdre, and wanted to share their support for Loyola in memory of their deceased children, Rosalind, who died one day after birth, and Gregory who was 27.
A “true evangelist” for mountaineering and rock climbing, Greg (1964-1992) lived to share his passion for the outdoors. He dedicated his career to educating the general public on outdoor and climbing safety. On his 14th climb of Mount Rainier in Washington State, Greg and his climbing partner lost their lives in an avalanche. The Terry Family hopes that Greg’s life will always serve as a reminder to students to “live life by doing what you love.”
