Business Communication

BA in Information Technology

The Business Communication concentration is designed for IT degree students interested in organizational communications and messaging. Students will be trained in theoretical principles of communication with a variety of audiences and situations, as well as the technology that drives today's digital media platforms.

This concentration is ideal for those seeking leadership roles in digital marketing, web development, project management, and email or database marketing.

Degree Requirements

The BA in Information Technology with Business Communication concentration comprises 120 credit hours. College degree completion courses at Loyola are offered in 8-week evening/weekend sessions. Courses are offered in both traditional (on-campus) and online formats.

I. Information Technology Major: 36 credit hours

  • COMP 170: Introduction to Object-Oriented Programming
  • COMP 251: Introduction to Database Systems
  • COMP 305: Database Administration
  • COMP 3XX: Data Processing, Analysis, and Visualization
  • COMP 3XX: Introduction to Web Application Development
  • COMP 317: Social, Legal, and Ethical Issues in Computing
  • CPST 250: Foundations of Organizations
  • CPST 310: Accounting Principles and Applications
  • ECON 201: Principles of Economics: Introduction to Microeconomics
  • STAT 103: Statistics

Requirements and Systems Analysis (choose one of the following):

  • COMP 320: Software Systems Analysis
  • INFS 347: Systems Analysis and Design
  • ISOM 393: Requirements Analysis & Communication

Project management (choose one of the following):

  • CPST 349: Project Management
  • COMP 3XX: IT Project Management

II. SCPS Common Curriculum: 9 credit hours

  • CPST 399: Capstone

III. Business Communication Concentration: 18 credit hours

  • COMM 277: Organizational Communication

V. Electives

A total of 120 credits are required for the degree at Loyola University Chicago. Sources of the remaining credits can include courses offered in the SCPS 8-week session schedule or the 16-week semester schedule. Transfer credits (not already used in the major, concentration, or University Core), Prior Learning Assessment, CLEP, DSST, or ACE-evaluated credits (such as your military transcript) can all used to fulfill the remaining elective credit requirements that get you to 120 credits, subject to residency and other requirements.
